Honoring History and Freedom: A Return Home for Watertown Juneteenth

I am incredibly honored to announce that I will be delivering remarks at the 12th Annual Watertown Juneteenth celebration on June 19, 2025, at Thompson Park. I grew up at Fort Drum and consider the Watertown area my home.

My parents, Charles and Barbara Webber, played a pivotal role in the historic transition of Camp Drum to the Fort Drum we know today, home of the 10th Mountain Division. This transformation brought about a significant and positive shift in our region, leading to a notable increase in the number of Black/African American people in our region.

I am absolutely thrilled that the Watertown community continues to embrace and celebrate Juneteenth as a way to honor the rich history of Black leaders, especially the Black military leaders who paved the way for the many brave soldiers serving our country at Fort Drum today.

For me, Black History is not a separate narrative; it is an integral part of American history. Every American benefits from the profound contributions of Black leaders throughout time.

My remarks at the Juneteenth celebration will focus on this very idea: the profound importance of honoring Black History and Freedom as vital to America’s overall story and its continued well-being as the most powerful country in the world. By embracing and understanding this shared history, we strengthen the fabric of our nation and ensure a more inclusive and prosperous future for all.

I look forward to celebrating with the Watertown community and reflecting on the significance of this important day.
